Educational Murals

My main aim is to create murals that encourage children to be curious about the world around them and to seek the underlying science behind everyday phenomena. I do this by hiding questions and their answers in the murals. The game then is to match the pairs. For instance in a mural depicting the arctic tundra I put:

Q. Why do Bearded Seals have whiskers?
A. Whiskers are sensitive & help the seal to find food on the ocean floor.

I also try and encourage children to see analogies and patterns in nature and reflect on them. For instance in the ocean mural I put:

Whales have streamlined (pointed) bodies that help them move easily through the water. Can you name a part of a bird that is streamlined?

For the jungle mural I tried to make the children take away lessons from the behaviour of each animal. For instance:

Q. Which animals shed their old skins about once a month?
A. Snakes.

Martin Luther King Mural (January 2007)

This mural will be painted by the students of Charles Drew Middle School on Januray 15th 2007. Here is the sketch.

Martin Luther King Mural

I wanted to show the history of the non-violent movement which can be traced back to Leo Tolstoy in his amazing book "The Kingdom of God is within you". This book inspired Mahatma Gandhi to start the non-violent movement in India; the power of which drove the British out of the country. Martin Luther King Jr. in his turn was inspired by Gandhi and even went to India to meet him.

In the center of the sketch, I tried to depict the premier learning institutions (Harvard and MIT) in our country with Tennyson's quote on top, "To strive, to seek and not to yield". Columbia with Rodin's Thinker comes next as Dr. Charles Drew (after whom the school is named) studied here (and at Harvard). Dr. Mae Jemison was the first African American female astronaut and Dr. Marie Maynard Daly was the first African American woman to earn a PhD in Chemistry.

Parent Center Mural (October 2006)

The mural was for the Parent Center at Trinity Elementary School in Los Angeles.

I wanted to incorporate the existing windows in the mural and so painted various scenes as seen through windows. Each window frames an aspect of animal parenting. I also have a description for every group of animals and how their parenting skills are special. For instance:

Caring –Alligators are the most nurturing mothers of all reptiles.

Community Care – Groups of older zebras and giraffes look after all the babies in the herds.

Learning from Observing -Baby cheetahs learn to stalk their prey by watching their mothers.Trinity Parent Center Mural

Early Murals in India (2000)

My first murals were for children in a small school in India. I tried to create different worlds for the children to escape into.
